November-December 2015

We have been enjoying talking about families and homes along with a variety of holiday traditions.  The children worked on learning phone numbers and addresses.  We shared pictures of our families on our classroom family tree.  During December we were busy with activities related to Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, and Kwanzaa.  Special emphasis was placed on the sharing and caring part of the holiday season as we made ornaments from toilet paper rolls for the members of Green Tree Church.

October 2015

We have been enjoying lots of time outside during the beautiful fall days.  The children in both classes enjoyed learning how to play tug of war.  Wonderful for developing core strength which ultimately leads to strengthening all those small muscles used for cutting, coloring, and writing.  We so appreciate our visits from Black Rock Fire Company in October.  We work hard to reinforce fire safety during play time in the classroom.IMG_1271 IMG_1299 IMG_1283

September 2015

September has just flown by and we are already into October.  Our classes have already developed into such nurturing communities. We are learning to communicate, cooperate, and resolve our conflicts!  Such important social and emotional skills for life.  We have been enjoying the great weather.  A favorite game this month in both classes has been “tug of war”.  What a great way to have fun while developing language, social, and gross/fine motor skills!

Our Garden

Garden Growing

Our classes enjoyed the spring months at school.  It was wonderful to be outside again!  Early in the spring we planted some vegetable seeds in the classroom.  We decided to try to grow and maintain a garden here at our school.  Since we will be having summer camps we have plenty of helpers for weeding, watering, and hopefully picking some fresh vegetables.  We are growing string beans, cucumbers, and squash in our little garden.  Just another example of the hands-on learning fun we have here at Little Acorns!

Our “Frigid” February 2015!

Despite the record cold temperatures of February our classes have been busy learning through play each day.  We have been so grateful for our full size gym space this winter.  We have been spending time there each session.  The children enjoy playing a variety of cooperative group games such as making “human” sandwiches and “What Time is it Miss Evelyn.”  They are getting to practice important motor and social skills while getting exercise and burning off some energy.

We also had fun this month learning about animals of the North and South Poles.  The educator from the Perkiomen Watershed Conservancy came to our school and taught us about some of them and we continued a more in-depth study of Penguins using great children’s literature such as Tacky The Penguin.  The children loved making Walrus masks and creating their own Tacky penguins to hang in our classroom.
